george slawinskiMr George Slawinksi

Chair

Term of Office:
12 Nov 2013 - 11 Nov 2017

I have lived in Aughton for 38 years and joined the Governing Body as a Parent Governor 18 years ago. After that period I was subsequently co-opted to continue working on the governing body when my 3 children left Ormskirk Grammar School to study for language degrees. Six years ago I was elected as Chair. Following my retirement as a dental surgeon, I became a tutor at the University of Liverpool in the School of Dentistry and also studied for a Spanish degree via the Open University. I was also involved in an EU team which monitored dental teaching standards in universities abroad. My principal interests are my children, grandchildren, digital photography, music, modern languages and science. I am privileged to work with a team of experienced Governors who are fully committed to supporting and challenging the school thus helping to provide the best possible education for every child. I believe that education is the cornerstone of our future society with good discipline, quality teaching and high aspirations being of paramount importance together with a safe, caring and happy environment in which all our children can learn effectively.

rose halsallMrs Rose Halsall

Vice Chair

Term of Office:
12 Nov 2013 - 11 Nov 2017

I am a retired police officer but now part of my family's glass manufacturing business. I am currently studying Egyptology online at Exeter University and I co-ordinate a weekly hieroglyphs class.

I became involved in education in 1996 when I became a Parent Governor at Ormskirk Grammar School. I was involved in the formation of the new Ormskirk School, later becoming a co-opted governor. In 2008 I was then invited to join the Foundation Trust and became its Chairman in 2011.

During my 18 years as a Governor I have had responsibility for Child Protection, Attendance and the Arts. I have been a volunteer in the LRC, supporting the librarians and overseeing the computer suite. I also helped in textiles classes and still regularly assist with costumes during the annual school shows.

I was elected Vice Chairman of the governing body in 2011 and currently chair the Pupil Welfare and Pupil Discipline Committees. I am also a member of the Standards & Effectiveness Group (SEG) and I take an active role in the interviewing of new staff.

Following a 15 year career in retail management I chose to return to my love of science after the birth of my two children and graduated in 2004 with a first class honours degree in Secondary Science. I have spent the last 12 years teaching at Deyes High in Maghull with responsibilities ranging from curriculum development, Gifted and Talented education and intervention for improved attainment within Science. Following a number of years coaching and mentoring colleagues to become outstanding teachers I now also have responsibility of recruiting and training new teachers within the Associated Merseyside Partnership SCITT, alongside my continuing responsibilities as a Science Teacher. I am passionate that all children deserve great teachers and am pleased I can support Ormskirk School and its SEND provision as a Parent Governor.

Parent Governor

Term of Office:
11 Feb 2014 - 10 Feb 2018

Being a Mum to Megan and Molly has been my primary role for the last 14 years, and both my girls are happy and settled at Ormskirk school. My career for 30+ years has been predominately Manufacturing/ Logistics/ IT based. In my last corporate role I led UK production and logistics for an American conglomerate for 8 years following their acquisition of a company where I was Director on the Main Board. I have a passion for all things property so I designed and built my own house in Aughton where we now live. When I was 18 and chose not to take up my university offer I made a promise to my Father that I would go back to university someday. So at 50 I did just that, I studied on the Lancaster University Business Degree where I graduated with a First. I went on to complete the first semester of my PGCE, but life took over and I chose to step away from corporate life in 2014 and following my passion for all things property my husband and I established our own successful property portfolio and management company. Selecting the right people, Motivation, Continuous Development and Improvement of processes policies and people was a key part of my career and I hope to bring that experience to my role as Governor in helping the school and the students to improve and develop. I am currently on the Curriculum and Personnel & Pupil Welfare committees and have recently taken over the role as Governor for training/school visits and Link Governor.

Parent Governor

Term of Office:
11 Feb 2014 - 10 Feb 2018

I have lived in Aughton for 19 years, and have been a parent governor for 8 years, first at Town Green Primary School, and more recently at Ormskirk School. I have recently been re-elected for a second term of office as parent governor at Ormskirk School and have 2 children in years 11 and 13.

After gaining a degree in nutrition, I worked as a dietitian in the NHS, and then spent 25 years working with a medical nutrition company in marketing and new product development, eventually becoming a director. I was lucky to be able to travel internationally and see many different countries and their medical practice. I now work from home for a charity for children and adults with a rare disorder (galactosaemia) as their dietitian, but still link nationally and internationally with colleagues.

My aim is to help the school continue to improve, to achieve outstanding status, and for the children here to be happy and motivated. I am currently on the Curriculum and Personnel, Pupil Welfare, and Standards and Effectiveness ( SEG) Committee, and also assist in staff interviews.

I am passionate about providing opportunities for learning and chose Ormskirk school for my son as I believe it is ambitious, has a dedicated team of staff and will provide life chances for all. I am looking forward to working with the school as a parent governor.

martyn walmsley

Martyn Walmsley

Parent Governor

Term of Office:
21 Mar 2015 - 20 Mar 2019

I am a parent governor with three children in Ormskirk School, and one further child currently in primary school. I am also a parent governor at that primary school (Westhead Lathom St James) and have been for the past 10 years.

My father was in the RAF, so I travelled widely when I was younger, living in various places across the UK, as well as Germany, the Middle East, Indonesia and Borneo.

I studied Pure Maths in London, and became a computer programmer, living in London until 1997. I then got an IT job with Pilkington and moved to the North West, buying a house in Westhead in 2000. In 2002 I decided that I needed to expand my business knowledge so undertook an MBA with Liverpool University, which I completed over three years during evenings and weekends. My work with Pilkington (now owned by NSG) has taken me all round Europe as well as allowing me to spend a few memorable months in Tokyo.

Closer to home, I became a magistrate in 2008, and sat in Ormskirk Magistrate’s Court until it closed in 2016. I now sit in Chorley, Preston and Burnley a couple of times a month.

I believe Ormskirk School is an excellent school and I hope that my varied experiences allow me to bring a different perspective to the governing body.
